BIMA Shortlisted for GSMA’s Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets award
BIMA has been shortlisted for the Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets award in the Social Good category at this year’s GSMA’s Global Mobile Awards. The awards are a recognition and celebration of contributions made to the evolving mobile industry across the world.
The nomination acknowledges BIMA’s key contribution to global digital innovation by providing low-income, financially excluded consumers with the exposure and access to previously unattainable insurance and mobile health services.
BIMA is currently the leading emerging market insurance player, fuelling financial inclusion through end-to-end digitalised mobile technology.
The award nomination is based on a joint entry between BIMA and Millicom. In Africa, BIMA partners with Tigo, Millicom’s principal brand, in Senegal and Tanzania and with AirtelTigo in Ghana, to bring insurance products to millions of customers.
Together, BIMA and Millicom have sold more than 9.2 million policies to date since the start of their collaboration. In Ghana, BIMA's first market, one in ten life insurance policies is already provided by the BIMA/AirtelTigo partnership which has so far paid out more than 25,000 claims worth $2.4 million. Since its market entry in Ghana in 2010, BIMA has been a key player in helping increase the country's insurance penetration from 8% in 2010 to 29% in 2015.
BIMA has leveraged mobile technology and key partnerships with mobile operators to successfully open up micro-insurance to the mass market, and connect remote and underprivileged communities to vital financial services.
Winners of the awards will be announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, running from 26th February to 1st March.
